Fear Controls Us.

As you can see from some of my other post I am a big fan of quotes. And a quote I keep in my mind is from Will Smith, he says “Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real. But fear is a choice.” We all fear something from heights to failing. Some things are easier to get over such as exterior things (i.e. roller coasters, dogs, heights, or spiders). While some things are tougher to get past such as interior things (i.e. failure, success, rejection, or commitment).

I personally have a fear of roller coasters. I do not know why I am scared to ride a roller coaster. I have never been on one to know if it is scary. This is where the quote makes sense. I created this thing in my mind that tells me I’m scared of roller coasters. I chose to be scared of roller coasters. I can change my mindset and tell myself I am not scared of roller coasters. We underestimate the power of our mind. If we believe in something we can accomplish it. It’s just that simple. I could go to amusement park and just get on a roller coaster with a change of mindset. On a deeper note the interior fears we have can prevent us from being great. We cannot fear failing or being rejected. Nobody is perfect. We will not succeed at everything we do and if we do we aren’t challenging ourselves.

Another quote from the movie Rocky he says “It’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” We fear getting hit because we don’t think we are strong enough to get back up. If we believe in ourselves and work hard we won’t worry about getting knocked down by life because we know that we will bounce right back stronger and smarter. I tell people that I have never lost at anything a day in my life. People tell me that’s  impossible because everybody has lost before. But my mindset is different. I don’t believe in losing. Either I win or I learn how to win. It’s that simple. I apply that to every aspect of my life. If we don’t believe in losing it is impossible for us to fear it. Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player to ever walk this planet. He lead the Chicago Bulls to six NBA finals and they won all six. From 1990 until 1997 Michael Jordan and The Bulls were unstoppable. But Michael Jordan was drafted in 1984. He wasn’t winning championships for 6 seasons. He was learning how to win championships. We develop this mindset and the possibilities will be endless for us. If we stop believing in certain things we can no longer fear them. Thank you.

  1. Truth. I have let fear dictate my life. I am trying to get over it everyday. When you said you don’t believe in losing it reminded me of Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek. He said, “I don’t believe in no-win scenarios.” Ever since I heard those words, I have tried to apply them to my life. Sounds like you have a good grip on your fears. Good for you.

  2. This was such a good read and mostly because i can relate to it. I have been feeling so stifled lately by my family and by other little insecurities and now i see that it is because of my fear of disappointing my family. I let fear stop me from living and becoming the person that I’m meant to be. I don’t who that is yet but I know it’s more than this. Thank you for this post. I sure will try to test you concept of winning and losing and see how that works out for me. Good read.

    P.S. Rollercoasters are amazing…breathtaking. Literally.
